Anchor Brand History & Introduction
Founder Hsu Tzu-Jan identified the irreplaceable value of abrasive wheels for industrial and civilian applications during the Japanese colonial era. He invested all his assets into abrasive wheel research and collected comprehensive technical publications on abrasives, compiling a complete encyclopedia of abrasive expertise passed down to Anchor (Carbo) to this day.
After Taiwan’s retrocession, he founded Yi Li Scientific Factory in 1946. Following 1,215 failed R&D trials, he successfully fired Taiwan’s first 8-inch abrasive wheel in 1948, which is permanently preserved at the Yingge Ceramics Museum.
In the same year, he was invited to participate in the 1st Taiwan Provincial Exhibition – the landmark industrial and cultural grand fair of early post-war Taiwan, unmatched in scale by all subsequent local expos for decades. Held from October 25 to December 5, 1948, the six-week exhibition attracted a total of 420,000 visitors, an unprecedented attendance figure for that historical period.

From the 1960s onward, the Taiwan government rolled out export-oriented policies, transforming Taiwan from an agrarian society into an industrial economy. In 1965, Founder Hsu Tzu-Jan established Tzu-Jan Chemical Works under the Yi Li Scientific Factory banner. The factory imported feldspar, kaolin clay and glaze raw materials to supply manufacturers across the ceramic industry.
He was also elected the first chairman of the Taiwan Ceramic Association. He led industry delegations on technical study tours to Japan, introducing cutting-edge manufacturing concepts and high-grade raw materials that pushed Taiwan’s ceramic craftsmanship to new heights.
Hsu Tzu-Jan’s contributions to Yingge, Taiwan’s renowned ceramic capital, extended far beyond abrasive wheel manufacturing. He advocated for the installation of natural gas pipelines across the district, gradually replacing heavily polluting coal-fired kilns with cleaner gas kilns. Gas-fired kilns enabled local ceramic factories to produce far more delicate, refined ceramic goods.
The mass import of premium kaolin clay and rollout of district-wide natural gas pipelines represented the most transformative revolution for all traditional industries in Yingge, driving sustained prosperity for local ceramic manufacturers.
